Generally speaking, the New Moon is an exciting time but that excitement comes at a lower frequency. If your energy feels a bit lessened, that's totally normal! The Scoop
Fateful, Fate-Full; Faithful, Faith-Full; Set Some Intentions & You Gotta Have Faith
Happy Chinese New Year! Year of the (Metal) Ox! If you were born in 1961, you’re a Metal Ox too, thus completing a cycle and having your first animal + elemental “return.” Other Ox years (with different elements) include: 1973, 1985, 1997, and 2009. If you’re an Ox, this is supposedly a lucky year for you!
The Chinese Zodiac is interestingly parallel to the Jupiter cycle in Western astrology, which also has to do with luck and chance and it also changes about every year (it takes Jupiter exactly 12 years to go around the 12 signs). Anyone who knows a bit about transit astrology can see why this Jupiter link is especially auspicious for 2021 in particular!
The Chinese New Year always starts on the Aquarius New Moon, so happy New Moon! This is such an important Lunation for setting intentions for this next lunar year. It’s perfectly timed with the solar calendar too, as around mid-February tends to be when everyone’s “New Year’s Resolutions” start falling off. This is a time for recommitting to the things that are worth recommitting to and accepting that the other things have fallen off and were meant to do so!

New Moon is for Setting Intentions: What do you want to manifest?
The New Moon happens when the Moon moves into exact conjunction with the Sun. Astronomically, this means that the Sun's light cannot be reflected off of the Moon, because it's essentially 'blocked' by it, hence why it appears dark to us here on Earth.
Why is it a time to set intentions when the Moon and Sun are in conjunction? Well, in astrology, when planets are in conjunction, it means that their energies are merged. They are essentially acting as one entity. A hybrid.
When this happens with the two most important 'planets' (the luminaries, i.e., the Sun and Moon), that literally means that our Egos and Souls are merged with each other. This is the perfect time for setting intentions because our 'heads and hearts' are at their optimal alignment, so we are in the best position in the entire lunar cycle for deciding what we really want (Sun) and what we really need (Moon).
Venus and Jupiter are both benefics, and their annual meeting is an extremely auspicious one! If you're feeling a lot of good juju around this New Moon, this is why! Use it!
Interestingly, though, both are square to Lilith (who is transiting through Taurus). We'll talk more about Lilith at a later time (though you can feel free to check out what has already been posted about her on @TheScopeScoop Instagram). What you really need to know right now is that this is actually a very good thing.
This New Moon: Use the luck to your advantage!
Just as Jupiter was involved with the Full Moon, he is involved again now. This is extremely auspicious. Any intentions set now will have much more likelihood of being supported by chance and destiny--pronoia. Use this!
New Moon Ritual
There are a number of different live events and videos that you can attend/watch at the time of the New Moon. You can also make your own personalized ritual.
The best thing to do is to join the Rose Quartz tier of the 888 Collective’s Patreon, which gives access to the Sacred Si-Stars New & Full Moon Ceremonies led by the amazing goddess, Ally, of Shanti Community (www.shanticommunity.com). You also get access to all of the 888 Collective’s incredible retreats on the four major seasonal changes of the astrological year. And we happen to have an absolutely incredible Chakra-themed retreat coming up for the Spring Equinox, so mark your calendars for March 13-20, 2021!
Any ritual that you create/curate for yourself for the New Moon should be centered around Setting Intentions. If that's simply doing a bit of meditation and then writing your list (perhaps with some incense burning and binaural beats for ambiance).
One of the things about the digital age that we live in is that there is so much conflicting information online about how to do New Moon rituals. What happens if we miss it? Do we set intentions before, during, or after the New Moon is exact? Do you burn the list of intentions or keep it to review later? So many questions! Here's the simple answer:
There are plenty of methods for rituals: do what works best for you and aligns with what you need at this moment.
The scoop is that though we are all one, humans and cultures are diverse. That is one of the most beautiful things about humanity. It is the cultural background of whatever individual you are asking about the New/Full Moons that is going to inform their ritual practices.
And please note that if an individual is claiming that their way is the "true" way, they are LYING! This is gatekeeping and it is very toxic, let alone simply being incorrect!
But, if you want some suggestions, the main general steps that you should take include: releasing, grounding, intention setting, and one small step.
Releasing
One of the best methods of releasing is yoga. Release the tension in your body and you’ll be amazed at how your Mind and Ego naturally release their tensions and oppositions as well. This is a powerful way for your physical and emotional spiritual connection to be enhanced.
Because the New Moon is associated in Medical Astrology with being a time of low energy, make sure that you’re not going to hot and heavy on your physical output. There is also a clash of the titans going on between Mars and Saturn, which means there may be physical limitations (or consequences from over-exertion). Be mindful of your energy!
Grounding
The hands-down best method of getting your Mind and Spirit grounded is by meditated. You can do a guided meditation on Youtube, there are several that are specifically meant for the New Moon.
Another, somewhat different way to do grounding, particularly for women*, is to simply listen and sing along (and with intention) to the amazing album by Alicia Bonnet and the New Moon Singers, "New Moon Journeys: Chants to Sing in Sister Circles." Even if you're alone, doing some of these chants (particularly "We All Come from the Goddess") can be extremely grounding.
Intention Setting
The main way you can set intentions is, once grounded, asking yourself the question: What do I want? Do not ‘think’ of the answer. Simply listen for it.
There are also many guided intention setting rituals and prompts available, such as a great one from Tasha at The Libra Tarot (https://www.patreon.com/thelibratarot). It’s technically a spread for Tarot cards, so if you read Tarot, you should definitely do the Spread (or get Tasha to do one for you!), but these are also just incredible reflection prompts!
If you want to make cosmically aligned intentions, you should definitely see where this New Moon is happening within your chart. The first thing is to see which house it is in for you.
One Small Step
This is an important part of any New Moon ritual. This means taking one tiny, minuscule step in the direction of your intentions.
For example, if this is activating your 2nd and 3rd houses and one of your intentions is to finally buy a car, one small step you can take in this direction is to simply do a quick google search for price-checking or seeing models you like, etc. This is free and takes only a second (you should avoid allowing it to become a rabbit hole, that’s what Capricornian self-discipline is all about).
Wise Words for this New Moon
If you go to our page on Instagram, @TheScopeScoop, you'll see that we've already posted some quotes from the incredible James Baldwin essay, "Every goodbye ain't gone," published inNew York Magzine (1977). The full essay can be found in google books.
The wise words for this New Moon are continuing this cosmically aligned process of deeper reflection and contemplation in the midst of a Mercury Retrograde (when our Minds need reflection most of all).
Further, they are absolutely perfect for the New Moon. This is exactly what the difference between simply hoping and actually manifesting is.
